"I had the privilege of painting on location in Monet’s gardens, with special permission of Foundation Claude Monet, first in 1998 and again in 2005. For two weeks of my first study, I followed in the footsteps of Monet, Cezanne and others who painted the legendary light of Giverny. I spent a third week of plein air painting in Provence, capturing the olive groves and shadows of Van Gogh in Saint-Rémy and Arles, and Provençal villages of antiquity. These works on canvas represent inspirations from both trips and are informed by the natural world."

Paintings by Artspace artists Carol Chianese, Anne Haynes Jenkins, and Dianne T. Rodwell from their fall 2005 study in Monet's ancient village of Giverny, France (population 500). They studied with internationally known painter Gale Bennett through ArtStudy Giverny, lodging one block away from Monet's world famous house and gardens, painting there daily in privacy afforded ArtStudy participants, practicing the impressionist technique of capturing light and atmosphere directly from nature, in plein air. The curriculum included the study of impressionist theory, and the history of the impressionist and plein air movements. ArtStudy provided painting excursions to nearby Moulin de Fourges, Vernon, and Les Andelys with additional sessions at ancient Hotel Baudy and selected areas along the Seine River. The artists displayed their works in a special on campus exhibition with guest dignitaries from Giverny and Foundation Claude Monet, celebrating the 10th year anniversary of ArtStudy Giverny.
