Maxfield Garrish was created as part of a fundraising event for Raleigh's Longview School: The Raleigh Goat Walk! The event takes place at City Market on October 6th, 2006, from 6 until 9 pm.

Blair Ligon was one of several local artists creating art from pre-cast resin statuary for the event. Maxfield is a pun on the famed 20th century artist and illustrator, Maxfield Parrish. The yellow on blue of maxfield's coat was an echo of M. Parrish's famous mountain landscapes. The horns and goatee are bound in hand dyed floss donated by Weeks Dye Works in Garner NC.
