The theme of ecology was selected in honor of Earth Action Day (EAD), which seeks to celebrate and appreciate the Earth while acknowledging our human relationship to it. EAD recognizes the Earth’s resources are finite and therefore our behaviors should align with the Earth’s preservation. EAD seeks to explore alternative ways of living that reduce our footprint and in many cases eliminate our use of natural resources.

Margaret Moore Senter 1922—2009 Retrospective
Blair Ligon is curating the exhibit.
Opening: Friday, May 7, 6:00 pm
May 7 – May 29, 2010:
Artspace, 201 E. Davie St., Raleigh NC

(Hay Bales) Margaret Senter painted at Artspace in Raleigh for 22 years. She was a member of the Artspace founding generation in 1986 and 1987.

Margaret was part of the movement among Raleigh's artists in the 1970's and 1980's to band together in critique groups with such luminaries as Ben Williams, Joe Cox and Bob Rankin. These groups (including VAE!) of amateurs, semi-pro's, teachers and professionals were the source for the first Artspace artists in November, 1986. Artspace struggled to fill the studios and the artists struggled to pay the rent.

The retrospective will show the journey of one of Artspace's self-taught artists from amateur to polished professional, from domestic hearths to corporate boardrooms. Margaret was a prime example of how bringing together a critical mass of artists in the Artspace studios created a crucible for moving local artists from the provincial to the contemporary. We see Margaret growing from the restraints of representational work to the pure joy of color and abstract expressionism. From draftsmanship to musical compositions.

Many times Artspace has been referred to as the anchor and the beginning of Raleigh's Moore Square Art District. It's easy to forget how brave and visionary it was to be an Artspace Artist in this small town of the 1980's as the skyscrapers now rise around us.

"This is life, and you will experience the ups and the downs and do what you have to do." —Margaret Senter
